Man…these guys were sick.

Seriously…I get that Coats and Devs were good in ‘07…but how did these guys NOT win drums that year?

They were clean as shit, and this book is pretty awesome.

Top 3 Phantom Regiment Closers

That Spartacus closer gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME I listen to it/watch it.

Three reasons: 1) You can just FEEL every note, and the driving pulse the battery gives…you can FEEL every note, every emotion that those guys are putting into it. And it’s fucking fantastic.

2) The crowd is literally on it’s feet for the final minute and a half of the show. And it starts from the top down. It’s not like people up front started first and then others followed suit. And I don’t know…THAT to me makes that standing O all the more emotional.

And 3) Not ONLY does the crowd stand for like the final 2 minutes…EVERY PERSON IN THAT CROWD is almost WILLING PHANTOM to a world championship. It sounds like the entire crowd is screaming “I AM SPARTACUS” with the corps. And I mean, at the end of the day, that kind of fan interaction is what you’re shooting for. To help bring the crowd into a place that, even if for a moment, you can all share.

And that crowd will forever be apart of that show.

And THAT…to me…cements it as the best closer of all time. Not just of Phantom’s, but of ALL Drum Corps.

But you almost have to feel bad for BD at that point. You’re sitting in the tunnel, trying not to focus on what’s going on on the field, and you just HEAR those final moments of that show. And you HEAR the crowd, and you hear the ovation and applause. And you have to follow that? Fuck that.

If you have some free time, listen to this.

This is the Alan Kristensen tape from Phantom’s finals run in 2010.

Phantom was just SO. GOOD. in 2010. No one touched them, and this tape just shows that. This is the perfect judge tape too. You just tell how passionate he is about the activity, and when he actually gets emotional at the end because of just how GREAT the performance was…just proves that DCI judges have the best jobs in the world.

Good Lord.

Paul Rennick is a genius. I have NO clue how he thought of any of those parts. But they all fit and it all made sense. And after listening to this for like the…20th time, I don’t think anyone else could’ve written a book that would sound better than what Rennick wrote.

Good God it’s perfect.

They won best brass for a reason.

That reason: Because they aren’t human.

ARGH

This is…SO. GOOD.

I can’t even…like…describe the feeling this gives me.

Seriously.

Crown Tuning/Chords for Finals warm-up 2012

Seriously…how underrated was this quad line this year?

Kind of went under the radar…but seriously…listen to how clean they are.

And they aren’t playing easy stuff. I think they were the cleanest quad line all season. At least the most consistently clean all season.

Hot Damn that quad feature is amazing.

Take a look at how intense this book is.

And this was from late JUNE.

LATE JUNE!

I love Paul Rennick and his percussion sections.

I wonder…if they were to change their names, would the Blue Devils still be given such high praise?

What if the Blue Stars had done that show? Exact same way, exact same performance.

Would they be in the top five? Champions?

I wonder.

Also…I feel awful for the Cavies man. Losing your entire staff almost. Sucks, but they’ll be back.

Overall, good season for DCI, with even the lower placing corps coming out with some pretty cool ass shows.

So congrats to the Devs players for another championship. I just really hope other corps start to get the talent to usurp these guys. Maybe they’ll start making good shows again if they aren’t winning.

How do you let watering down BD take your trophy?

Come on man.

It sucks being second fiddle in your state.

I DON’T understand the constant adoration for the Blue Devils show this year.

I don’t get it.

Micheal Boo: “This show is beyond magnificent in its construction. It require a lot from the audience…I grant you that. But it’s a huge step forward to a place we haven’t been before.”

…and…

Every moment seems scripted to exploit the dada theme, adding confusion in such a way that something normal about now would look out of place.”

… “There are so many layers, but ultimately, there is one layer…it’s that well woven together.”

This show almost has to be watched on a sub-concious level and appreciated with your brain in the freezer with the left-over peach yogurt.”

—-

So…The concept is so good, because it’s difficult to understand, constantly confusing it’s audience and not making any sense?

And THAT is taking us places in the activity? How?

I’ve watched the show enough times to say that this abstractism (it’s not a real word…just bare with me) that BD has become so in love with in recent years…is EXTREMELY DISTRACTING, and makes me walk away saying…”HOW THE FUCK IS THIS IN FIRST?!”

Their horns aren’t playing anything NEARLY as impressive as Crown is, and when they are playing difficult stuff, it’s dirty. It’s dirty in comparison to Crown anyways.

Their visual is the only boost they have.

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE FAWNING OVER THIS SHOW?!

I just don’t get it.

Does BDs staff just get high as shit on cocain and just write shit down?

Do they drop acid and record their every thought, then pick 6 random time stamps out of the recording and base a show off of that?

Seriously.

I understand the Dada movement. I get it. WHEE, playing nonsense is fun.

Call me old fashioned, but I find it MORE impressive, and more thought provoking to reach out to your audience and really try to grab a heart string. To try to cause those goosebumps when they connect with your show. When they understand where they’re going with it and where they came from while watching it.

Taking them on a nonsensical journey into P.T. Barnums psyche is not what I call fun.

It’s fucking ridiculous.

Anyways…Here’s to hoping that Crown takes brass and SCV takes Drums. Just so, if BD were to win, they wouldn’t take every caption.

Rant over with.

HOT DAMN!

SCV throwing down.

I just love Rennick’s writing SO much, it’s not even funny.

Like I said…Hannum never disappoints.

Crown sounding good early.

What in the Blue hell is going on here?

Sounds great though. Blue Devils and jazz/blues just go hand in hand.

And DAMN battery’s playing some NOTES. Pit too.

I just…I’m not a big fan of how the quads are tuned. Personal preference I guess, but I loved the Devs tuning back from like…2000-2005, before they switched to Remo Pin-Stripes, then ultimately to Evans “System Blues”. With the Dynasty’s and the Suede heads, it just sounded so perfect.

But, you can’t complain when they sound good on the field, so…more power to them. Pearls always sound good anyways.
